Small, thin, compact yet astonishingly powerful is how we can describe RIM’s Blackberry pearl 8100. This is the smallest smart phone of the blackberry community to have hit the markets successfully. The handset is light weighted and can be operated with ease single handed. Blackberry pearl 8100 does satisfy the other smart phone expectations such as being a phone of commendable quality, internet browser, email service, messaging service which includes instant messaging.

Screen:
The TFT display screen is comparatively small in dimensions (50 * 14.5 * 107) mm but a high resolution (240 x 260) pixels screen, which is light sensitive and can adjust itself to the lighting levels of its surroundings. Blackberry Pearl 8100 provides up to 65k colours, making your eyes feel colourful. The bright luminous screen and the highly polished edges gives pearl 8100 a rich look.
Keyboard:
The QWERTY style keyboard comes as the numeric keypad with extra keys on either sides of it. The smooth navigation key helps the user to make menu selections from the system easily. The scroll wheel is no longer present but it is replaced by a miniature white trackball. It makes you feel comfortable once you get used to it.
Internet browser:
RIM Blackberry pearl 8100 has a HTML browser which can not be said as great but is functional. The multitasking facility of blackberry is a time saving feature. As you are downloading a big web page, you can go on to do some other task. Blackberry pearl 8100 comes with an embedded RMI wireless modem. The quad-band network connectivity enables you to use the phone in many countries.
Memory:
The phone has 64MB internal flash memory. You can use this memory to store any data. In case you need extra, this memory can be extended by adding a MicroSD memory card.
Battery:
It uses the rechargeable lithium ion battery. The battery, when in fully charged status, has a standby time of 360hrs and 3.5 hrs talk time.
Interface:
Lacking of an in-built Wi-Fi is a drawback but Bluetooth is available. Interface with other devices can be done either via Bluetooth or by using USB cable connection. The fast data transfers and download facilities are made possible by the GPRS and EDGE technologies.
Camera:
The 1.3 mega pixel camera comes with zoom and flash options. The zoom and capture keys are easy to use. The small mirror situated just next to the camera lens enables the user to take self portaits. It is very surprising that it misses the video record facility. Pearl’s camera can take still pictures but you can not record any video.
Media player:
Blackberry pearl 8100’s major advantage is that it has a built-in media player, which can be used to play all the major audio formats. The ring tones which are played in MIDI, MP3 and polyphonic sounds are of good clarity.
Messaging:
Messaging is also possible in blackberry pearl 8100. You can send and receive messages such as text, multimedia, instant messages and emails too. The system that RMI has makes it possible to receive mails as soon as they are sent.
Maps:
Blackberry pearl 8100 is the first blackberry PDA to be having the map application. The blackberry maps are extremely helpful, when you are in some unknown areas. It provides you with local maps and gives text-based driving directions. But the GPS facility is not available which you can add using the Bluetooth GPS receiver.

Other facilities:
The voice dialling facility is also available. This makes the process of dialling a very fast and easy process. The phone also has document viewer which acts as an interface between your smart phone and pc, helps you to view any word, excel or PDF documents. The document viewer includes in it a component known as media manager that allows you to move pictures, videos, tones and music from your device to pc and vice-versa. Its personal information management applications are good and useful. Lack of 3G can be considered as a major disadvantage.
